PVC Asset Protection Shrouds for Transformers
A PVC asset protection shroud for transformers is a durable, weather-resistant cover made from high-quality PVC, designed to safeguard transformer components from environmental hazards such as moisture, dust, UV radiation, and physical damage. These profiles are custom fitted to encase the upper portion of a transformer, including cable entry points and terminal connections. The shroud is often black or dark coloured to enhance UV resistance, with a smooth, seamless finish to prevent water ingress and corrosion.
Constructed through our specialist dip moulding process, these shrouds are lightweight yet robust, capable of withstanding temperatures from -40°C to +100°C and offering resistance to chemicals and abrasion. They may feature an open-bottom design with a flared base to accommodate the transformer’s mounting structure, and some versions include pre-moulded openings or slits for cable glands and ventilation. The material is electrical grade with fire retardancy capabilities, compliant for safety in enclosed or high-risk environments. This type of shroud is widely used in industrial, utility, and outdoor settings to extend the lifespan of transformers, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure compliance with electrical safety standards.
Key Advantages of PVC Dip Moulded Asset Protection Shrouds
- 1Environmental Protection: PVC shrouds shield transformers from environmental factors such as dust, moisture, and debris, which can degrade components over time. They are designed not to retain water, preventing long-term issues like corrosion or insulation breakdown. This is especially valuable for outdoor or high-voltage applications where exposure to weather is a concern.
- 2Electrical Insulation: PVC is a non-conductive material, providing excellent insulation for transformer components like bushings and terminals. This reduces the risk of electrical faults, such as short circuits, and enhances safety by preventing accidental contact with live parts.
- 3Animal and Intrusion Protection: These shrouds offer a physical barrier against animal intruders (e.g., birds or rodents), which can cause outages by contacting live components. This helps maintain system reliability, particularly in rural or outdoor settings.
- 4Durability and Low Maintenance: PVC is resistant to corrosion and weathering, making it ideal for long-term use in harsh environments. Unlike other material shrouds, PVC does not rust, reducing maintenance needs. Additionally, reusable designs with features like tie wraps or push-through clips allow for easy inspection without compromising protection.
- 5Cost-Effective Customization: PVC shrouds can be manufactured using processes like dip moulding, allowing for custom designs tailored to specific transformer components (e.g., busbar covers, terminal covers). This flexibility ensures precise protection without the high costs associated with other materials like metal or specialized composites.
- 6Lightweight and Easy Installation: PVC is lighter than metal alternatives, simplifying installation and reducing labour costs. Reusable and easy-to-install features, such as push-through clips, further enhance practicality for maintenance teams.
- 7Fire and Chemical Resistance: PVC shrouds can be formulated with low smoke and fire retardancy grade properties, improving fire safety by reducing toxic emissions in case of a fire. They also offer resistance to certain chemicals, making them suitable for environments like chemical plants or coastal areas with high salinity.
- 8Aesthetic and Functional Design: While primarily functional, PVC shrouds can improve the visual appearance of transformer setups by covering exposed components, giving a cleaner and more professional look. This is particularly noted in applications where aesthetics matter, such as in visible industrial or urban settings.
